Katie Dugan, anchor of WYTV’s Daybreak program, spoke with Ohio MENTOR staff and foster parents during a series of interviews for Foster Care Awareness Month. Recognized nationwide, Foster Care Awareness Month gives a voice to youth in foster care and brings awareness to the amazing difference a loving foster home can have on a child in need. Daybreak’s series focused on the need for caring foster parents and on the challenging yet rewarding experiences being a foster parent brings.

Jaime Gillen, the foster parent recruiter for Ohio MENTOR’s Canton and Youngstown programs, shared some of the stories of our extraordinary foster parents with Ms. Dugan—some of which were featured in later Daybreak episodes. In her interview, Ms. Gillen explained what it takes to become a foster parent, who we call Mentors, and what to expect once you start the process. Ms. Gillen also briefly described some of the steps it takes to become a Mentor.

“While certification is comprehensive and detailed,” Ms. Gillen explained, “Ohio MENTOR helps you navigate the process. Our agency, as well as the state, wants to make sure that children are being placed in loving homes that are stable and safe for them. We want to ensure the kids are in homes where they can thrive.”
